Cultural World Heritage Sites

Precolumbian Chiefdom Settlements with Stone Spheres of the Diquís
A group of four archaeological sites in the Diquis Delta of Southern Costa Rica were collectively designated a cultural world heritage site in 2014. The sites include artificial mounds, paved areas, burial sites, and most notably, a collection of stone spheres between .7 meters and 2.57 meters in diameter, distinctive for their perfection, quantity, and size. The meaning of those spheres remains a mystery.

Natural World Heritage Sites

Cocos island National Park
Located in the Puntarenas Province on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Designated natural world heritage site in 1997.

Guanacaste Conservation Area
Dry forest region located in the Guanacaste and Alajuela Provinces of Costa Rica. Designated a natural world heritage site in 1999 and an extension was added in 2004.

Talamanca Range-La Amistad Reserves / La Amistad National Park (
Designated a natural world heritage site in 1983. Located in both Costa Rica and Panama.

Tentative List Sites

Corcovado National Park and Isla del Cano Biological Reserve
Submitted to UNESCO on January 30, 2003 as a candidate for being designated a natural world heritage site.
