Facts About Aguascalientes City

General information and facts about Aguascalientes City, Mexico. Aguascalientes was founded as a mining settlement in 1575 and it became a town in 1661. It is the capital of the small Mexican state of Aguascalientes.

Aguascaliente City is located in a dry region in the center of Mexico, approximately midway between the cities of Mexico City, Guadalajara,and Monterrey. At one time it was an important center for silver mining.

Aguascalientes is famous for its mineral baths, and for being popular a honeymoon destination because of it is an important center for the Cathlic faith. the city is rich in colonial period architecture.

Grapes are grown in this region, and brandy and sweet liqueurs are well-known products of this area. Other products made in this area include pottery, textiles, tiles, and majolicas. Another industry in this area is cattle ranching. Nissan also has manufacturing operations in the Aguascalientes area.

Some of the local dishes include a steamed lamb casserole known as "birrria", a special Aguascalientes-style mole, chicken in wine sauce, pickled hides, and roasted goat (cabrito).
