About Memorial Day in the United States
A special day established to honor the men and women who died serving in the United States Military. It is a U.S. federal holiday observed every year on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day is also known as "Decoration Day" because one of its most traditional activities is decorating the greaves of veterans and loved ones with flags, flowers, and other items.

The First Memorial Day
The first Memorial Day was declared to be May 30, 1868 and at that time it was known as "Decoration Day". It was designated by Civil War Republican Army Commander in Chief John A Logan for the purpose of "strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land".
